When scrolling through any document using the arrow keys on the keyboard the documents lock up.e
Basic areas to check for locking documents includes, cleaning temp files, X inserting documents, copying documents from viewer, save the document as a WP 5.1 document, and checking the printer for damaged drivers. 1. Temp files. If there is a large number of temp files in the temp directory general locking and freezing may occur. 2. Uncheck Enhanced File Dialogs.
To check for temp files use the following steps: 1. Select the Start Button. 2. Select Programs / MSDos Mode 3. at the prompt type in the following command: set (this can be either upper or lower case) then hit the enter key. 4. There should be 2 command lines TEMP= and TMP= 5. Write down the location for both TEMP and TMP 6. At the command prompt type the following command. cd\ hit the enter key cd
oot directory (this is where the temp / tmp file folders are stored on the root drive) cd temp del *.tmp once all the temp files are completely repeat the steps for the tmp directory if the path is different from the temp path. 7. type in the word EXIT this command will return to windows. To X insert a document: If the problem occurs on only one document try to X insert the document. 1. On a blank document type the letter X 2. From the menu bar select INSERT / FILE 3. On the open file dialog screen double click the specified file. 4. Backspace over the X. 5. Try working with the document. 6. If the issues do not re-occur select File / Save As and resave the document, the same name can be applied. If the problem persists copy the file from the viewer: 1. On a blank document select File / Open * If the menu bar on the file open dialog screen does not show up use the following technique to view the menu bar. * On the Look In dialog bar to the extreme right is a single icon for TOGGLE MENU ON / OFF. This needs to be depressed in order to view the menu bar options. Once depressed the options FILES / EDIT / VIEW / TOOLS / FAVORITE / HELP will appear. 2. On the file open dialog box select from the menu bar VIEW / PREVIEW / USE SEPARATE WINDOW 3. A separate window will appear ontop of the file open dialog screen. 4. From the File Open dialg screen select VIEW / PREVIEW / CONTENT. This will allow selected documents to be viewed. 5. Left mouse click on the file causing problems. 6. In the preview window begin to highlight the entire document. 7. Once the document is highlighted select from the File Open menu bar EDIT / COPY. 8. Close the File Open dialog window. 9. From the WordPerfect Document menu bar select EDIT / PASTE. 10. This will paste the document from the viewer to the WordPerfect document screen. When pasting the from the viewer the document will return as unformatted text. If working with X insert does not recover the document try saving the document as a WordPerfect 5.1 format. 1. Open the document causing problems 2. From the menu bar select File / Save As 3. Change the file type by clicking on the down arrow to the right of the FILE TYPE dialog box. 4. Select from the drop down list WordPerfect 5.1/5.2 5. Name the document other than the current document name. 6. Select the save button. 7. Try opening and manipulatig the document. If the problem resides with locking and freezing try reinstalling another copy of the current printer. Use the current Windows 98 cd. 1. From the start button select SETTINGS / PRINTERS 2. Select ADD PRINTER 3. To begin the wizard click on the NEXT button 4. Select from the manufacturers screen the vendor for the printer. 4a. Select from the printers screen the printer type. For all intents any printer can be used for troubleshooting purposes. Select Next. 5. Make sure that the current port is set for LPT1. This will vary in location depending on how the individual system is configured. Select Next. 6. The printer name will automatically appear in the printer name dialog box. Select YES to set the printer as default. Select Next. 7. Select NO to print a test page, it is not necessary. Select Finish. 8. This will begin to install the new printer. The Windows 98 cd needs to be in the drive to install the new driver. If none of the recovery techniques work a scan disk type utility can be ran to attempt to recover the document.n
