Once you have the font with euros installed, you access the euro symbol in different ways depending on whether you are using Windowsª, euro-enabled Windows, a Macª system, or regularly transfer documents between PCs and Macs. ------------------------- Standard Access ------------------------- Windowsª ------------------------- For most languages, including USA English, you can hold down the Alt key and type 0128 on the numerical keypad (with NumLock on). If you have added euro-support to your Windows system, then you can use key combinations such as AltGr+e. This combination is different for the various language versions of Windows and is not supported in USA Windows. These Windows key combinations are listed at: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/euro/symbol/symbol.htm#kbd --------------- Macintoshª --------------- The euro symbol is replacing the old universal currency symbol. On most Mac operating systems, you type Option + Shift + 2 ------------------------------------------ Problems accessing the euro ------------------------------------------ If you see some other symbol in place of the euro, check these items: 1. Make sure you have the euro fonts installed. Re-start your system after installing the euro fonts. 2. Use other methods for accessing the euro. If you were using the 'euro aware' directions, try using the 'not yet euro aware' directions, and vice versa. 3. Add or turn on euro support in your applications and operating system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Transferring Documents Between PCs and Macsª ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Not Yet Euro Aware For older applications that are not euro aware, use the euro symbol that is in the location of the old universal currency symbol. Windows: With NumLock on, hold down the Alt key and press 0164 on the numerical keypad. Or use whatever methods are needed by your version of Windows to access the universal currency symbol. Macintosh: Type: Option+Shift+2 Euro Aware ---------- If you have applications on both platforms that are euro aware, you should be able to use the standard access method appropriate to your application on each platform. When you are ready to transfer documents from one system to another, save the document in the other format first. For example: To transport a document from the Mac to the PC in Microsoftª Word: Open the document on the Mac in Word. From the File menu, choose Save As. Choose Microsoft Word for Windows from the Save As Type list. Save the document. Open the document in MS Word for Windows. Problems transferring documents between systems or platforms ------------------------------------------------------------ If you see some other symbol in place of the euro, or if the euro does not transfer in a document from one system to another, check these items: 1. Make sure you have euro fonts installed on both systems. Re-start your system(s) after installing the euro fonts. 2. Use other methods for accessing the euro. If you were using the 'euro aware' directions, try using the 'not yet euro aware' directions, and vice versa. 3. Add or turn on euro support in your applications and operating system on both systems. ------------------- Spreadsheets -------------------- Not Yet Euro Aware ------------------ To format cells as euro-dollars, you need to create a custom formatting based on your standard currency formatting selection. Follow the directions in your spread sheet to define a custom format for a cell. For this custom format, use your standard currency formatting as a guide. Replace the currency symbol you are now using (dollar sign, franc sign, pound sign, etc.) with the euro symbol, using one of the standard access methods listed above (Alt+0128, AltGr+e, Option+Shift+2, etc.). ----------------- Euro Aware ----------------- Follow the directions in your spreadsheet documentation to apply currency formatting to a cell, and look for the euro symbol in the list of currency options. -------------------------- Printing Problems ------------------------- If you see some other symbol printing in place of the euro, or if the euro does not print, check these items. 1. Make sure you have the euro fonts installed. Re-start your system after installing the euro fonts. 2. If the option is available in the printer driver, choose to download TrueTypeª fonts as outlines, or to download TrueType fonts as graphics. 3. If you can, use a PostScriptª printer driver 4. Use an older printer driver. NOTE: You may have to choose an older printer model to get a different printer driver. 5. Use a printer driver that ships with your OS, or is available from your operating system manufacturer. NOTE: You may have to choose an older printer model to get a different printer driver. 6. Try alternate methods of accessing the euro symbol. - In USA Windows or in non-euro aware Windows: try ALT + 0128 - In non-USA Windows 98 or in 95/NTª 4 with Euro support: try AltGr+e or whatever keystrokes Microsoft recommends - In Word, use "insert symbol" on the Insert menu. - Copy the character from the Windows Character Map utility. If euro printing is inconsistent: For example, the euro symbol in one font of a family set prints, but not from other fonts of the same family: a. Make sure you have the most recent font files with euro symbol installed for each member of the font family b. Make sure you have installed all the members of the font family. c. If you have many different printer drivers installed, remove some of the older printer drivers, and then restart the system. d. Refresh your printer's memory. You can do this by turning the printer off and then on. If the printing problem is still not solved, remove all your printers and re-install one driver for each printer from your operating system setup disk(s). ---------------- Remember ---------------- The euro standards are new. Printer driver, operating system, and application developers are making independent decisions about how to implement access to and printing of the euro symbol. Always consult your application, operating system, or printer Technical Support for euro symbol advice.
