You may receive an error indicating your serial number is invalid or Error 20 when launching Corel® Painter™ 12 after upgrading to a newer version of Mac (OS) X, including Mavericks
This issue is most likely caused by incorrect permissions created on key system folders during migration to a new version of Mac OS X causing issues with the activation of Painter 12.
METHOD 1
- From the Finder, click on the Go menu and select Go to Folder
- Type /System/Library/CoreServices and click Go
- Open the Directory Utility
- From the Directory Utility, click the icon to unlock the settings and enter your password
- Then go to the Edit menu and select Enable Root User
- You will now be prompted to create a password for the Root user, do not lose this password
- Leave the Directory Utility running and open a new Finder window
- Click on the Go menu and select Go to Folder
- Type /Library/
- Now Right-Click (or control-Click if you are using a MacBook) the Preferences folder
- Choose Get Info
- Click the beside Sharing & Permissions at the bottom of the Info window
- Click the Icon and enter your password to unlock the settings
- Change the permissions for Everyone to Read & Write
- Click the and choose Apply to enclosed items…
- Leave the Preferences Info window open and launch Painter 12
- You may be prompted to re-enter your serial number and re-activate Painter 12
- Once Painter 12 has launched successfully, return to the Preferences Info window
- Revert the permissions for Everyone back to Read only
- Click the and choose Apply to enclosed items… and close the Preferences Info
- Return to the Directory Utility
- Click the Edit menu and select Disable Root User
METHOD 2
This method requires use of the Terminal and sudo command, you must have a password on your computer account in order to use sudo.
- Go to your Launchpad or Applications folder
- Go in Utilities
- Open the Terminal
- Type in the following command and press enter (the command is case sensitive)
sudo /Applications/Corel\ Painter\ 12/Corel\ Painter\ 12.app/Contents/MacOS/Corel\ Painter\ 12
- Enter your password and press enter
- Painter 12 should launch and may prompt you to re-enter your serial number and re-activate Painter 12
