Information stored on a disc can be converted into a single file called a disc image. That disc image file can be used to reproduce the original disc. Roxio Creator supports reading and writing most mainstream disc image file formats, including the ISO disc image format. It also offers the Roxio proprietary disc image formats.
Roxio has two proprietary disc-image formats: Global-Image and Roxio Image. Global-Image and Roxio Image files contain not only the data files on a disc, but the exact placement of those files, their folder structure, read and write properties, and more. Files in the Global-Image format can be recognized by the .gi file-name extension. Roxio Disc Image files have a .c2d extension.
Note:
Being proprietary, some mastering products cannot read files in these formats, however. This could cause a problem if someone needed to create a disc from your disc image and they did not have the necessary Roxio software installed on their computer. For this reason, you also have the option to create disc images of data discs in a less complete, but more compatible, ISO format.
For users who installed Creator NXT (all versions) on Windows XP or Windows 7, The Roxio Disc Image Loader is available for use to “mount” .gi and .c2d image files. Once mounted, .gi and .c2d files behave like actual physical discs on your computers. A drive letter will be assigned to the disc image, turning them into “virtual discs”.
To open Disc Image Loader, launch Creator NXT, click on the Tools menu, and select “Load Disc Image”. Refer to the screenshot below.
Note:
To learn more about the Disc Image Loader and loading disc image files, open the “Help” menu in Creator NXT, select the “Help” item, and search for “Load disc image” or “Loading or ejecting disc images”.
For users who installed Creator NXT on Windows 8 or later (NXT 3 and earlier versions will have limited functionality on these newer operating systems), the Disc Image Loader will not be available. This is to eliminate any conflict with Windows 8’s built-in disc image “Mount” tool; and by extension with Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, as well. In order to load, or “mount”, disc image files, such as ISO files, you simply need to right-click on the file and select “Mount” from the menu. However, the Windows Mount tool does not support the Roxio Global-Image (.gi) or Roxio Disc Image (.c2d) formats. That being said, you will not be able load .gi or .c2d files as virtual discs on Windows 8 or later. You may, however, still burn them to physical discs.
Although the ability to load .gi and .c2d image files is no longer available on Windows 8 (or later), Creator NXT will still allow you to burn them to disc. So all is not lost. To burn your Roxio disc image files to disc, follow the simple steps below.
1. Select the Data - Copy project category.
A list of projects is displayed.
2. Click the Burn Disc Image project name.
3. In the project window, select a disc image file to burn using one of the following methods:
- Click the Browse button and navigate to the disc image file on your hard drive.
Or - Click in the text box next to the Browse button. A list of recently created disc image files appears. Choose a disc image file from the list.
4. Choose a recorder drive from Copy To drop-down list. If your system has only one drive, its name will be automatically displayed.
5. Insert a blank or rewritable disc into your recorder.
6. Select the number of copies of the disc image you want to burn.
7. Click the action button.
A copy of the original disc is created. If you are making more than one copy, follow the on-screen instructions to complete your project.
8. After the final copy has been made, click the Finish button.
