VideoStudio: MPEG-2 video files with AC3 audio play with no sound in VideoStudio preview

Symptoms

Certain MPEG-2 videos, particularly those encoded with AC3 audio, cannot be played with sound in VideoStudio; but they play fine outside of VideoStudio using players like VLC or X Media Player, as well as in Microsoft Clipchamp and other video editors.

Cause

VideoStudio uses the built-in AC3 codecs in Windows 11. The AC3 codec has been dropped from the latest (at the time of writing) Windows 11 24H2 build, and so left VideoStudio with nothing to decode AC3 audio with.

Resolution

You can restore the AC3 codec in Windows using 3rd-party applications like AnWave or Microsoft Dolby Digital Atmos Pack standalone installer . You will find instructions on how to apply the fix here.
