When you go to the Tools menu in WordPerfect® X5, Spell Check, Thesaurus and Grammatik® may be disabled or are not working right. Also Spell-As-You-Go™ may not work.

These instructions are also possibly useful when the Spell-As-You-Go or Spellcheck gives you wrong results.

------

We will need to clear out some of WordPerfect's settings about the Writing Tools from the computer. This will involve going into the registry, as well as erasing one folder

Follow the instructions in for more information about the Windows Registry.

One will need to know what version of Windows is used, and whether it is a 64-bit version or not.

  1. Make sure WordPerfect X5 is closed
  2. On Windows XP: Click on Start, and then Click on “Run”. Type “regedit” without the quotes, and hit “OK”
On Windows Vista | Windows 7: Click on Start, and in the “Start Search” area, type “regedit” and hit the “Enter” key.
  3. Click the + next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER
  4. Click the + next to SOFTWARE
  5. Click the + next to Corel
  6. Click the + next to "WordPerfect Office X5"
  7. Right click "Writing Tools", choose delete.
  8. Click the - next to "WordPerfect Office X5"
  9. Click the - next to "Corel"
  10. Click the - next to SOFTWARE
  11. Click the - next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER
  12. Click the + next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
  13. Click the + next to Software
  14. If this is a 64-bit version of Windows: Click on the + next to “WOW6432Node”
  15. Click the + next to Corel
  16. Right click "Writing Tools", choose delete.
  17. Close the Registry Editor
  18. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to "C:\Program Files\Corel\WordPerfect Office X5" and rename the Writing Tools folder to Writing Tools Old.
If this is a 64-bit version of Windows: The folder would have been inside: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\WordPerfect Office X5"
  19. We now need to let WordPerfect X5 repair itself.
    On Windows XP:
    * In the "Control Panel", click on "Add/Remove Programs".
    * Find "WordPerfect Office X5" in the list and click "Change/Remove". Follow the prompts and choose "Repair"
    On Windows Vista/Windows 7:
    * In the "Control Panel", click on "Uninstall Program" (It may be called "Programs and Features").
    * Find "WordPerfect Office X5" in the list and right-click on it. Choose "Uninstall", and follow the prompts to "Repair"

Once that is complete launch WordPerfect. You should now have access to the Writing Tools.

If the Spell Check is still not working, you may want to try renaming the User Word List for this version of WordPerfect, located below. The the file will be called WT15XX.UWL, where XX is the language (US for American English, example: WT15US.UWL)

User Word List for WordPerfect X5 in Windows XP
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Corel\WordPerfect Office X5\Writing Tools\WT15XX.UWL

User Word list for WordPerfect X5 in Windows Vista or Windows 7
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Corel\WordPerfect Office X5\Writing Tools\WT15XX.UWL
