Symptoms
You are unable to record system audio (any sound coming from your Mac's sound card) using Toast's audio capture features, particularly Toast Audio Assistant and Live Screen Capture.
Cause
Toast uses a virtual audio device to record system audio, called Soundflower, and it works only on Intel-based Macs. Its function is to route audio between applications allowing a user to make recordings. The 3rd-party developer of Soundflower hasn't updated the software to be compatible with Apple Silicon.
Soundflower doesn't work on Apple Silicon Macs (M series processors, e.g., M1, M2, M3, and M4) primarily because it relies on kernel extensions (kexts), which are not supported on the new architecture of Apple Silicon. Apple Silicon Macs use a different system architecture that doesn't support traditional kernel extensions, making it difficult for older software like Soundflower to function properly.
Resolution
There are currently no plans to find a suitable replacement for Soundflower, so system audio recording in Toast will not be possible at this time on Apple Silicon Macs.
